D.C. United traded midfielder Emmanuel Boateng to the Columbus Crew on Friday in exchange for defender Axel Sjoberg.
Boateng, 26, tallied nine goals and 13 assists in 108 games (65 starts) with the Los Angeles Galaxy from 2016-19 before being traded to the United on Aug. 14, 2019. The Ghana native played in three matches with D.C. in 2019 but has not yet appeared in a game in 2020.
"Emmanuel is a veteran, dynamic player who brings eight years of professional experience to our Club, and we are excited to welcome him to Columbus," Crew president and general manager Tim Bezbatchenko said in a statement. "We believe Emmanuel's speed on the flank and his familiarity with MLS makes him a valuable addition to our roster. We also want to thank Axel for his time with Crew SC, and we wish him the best in the next chapter of his career."
Sjoberg, 29, appeared in 88 games (84 starts) with the Colorado Rapids from 2015-19, contributing three goals and one assist. He joined Columbus this season but has yet to make his 2020 debut.
"We are excited to add some important depth at center back ahead of the continuation of the MLS season," said D.C. GM and vice president of soccer operations Dave Kasper. "Axel is a physically imposing center back who was known for his consistency and steadiness during his time in Colorado and we're looking forward to adding that experience and ability to our roster."
D.C. continues the season Friday at home against against FC Cincinnati while the Crew next face the visiting Chicago Fire on Aug. 20.
