Toronto FC look to continue their unbeaten run with a victory when they visit the Philadelphia Union on Wednesday.
Under interim coach Javier Perez, Toronto has a 2-0-3 record, most recently collecting a 1-1 draw against Nashville SC on Sunday. Omar Gonzalez gave Toronto FC an early lead in the 19th minute, though Robert Castellanos equalized for Nashville in the 41st.
While Gonzalez said his team was "disappointed" with a draw, the fifth consecutive positive result is another sign that Toronto FC (3-8-5, 14 points) has turned the corner from their early-season struggles.
"We're much better than we were a month ago. We're improving," Gonzalez said. "(Against Nashville) we controlled the majority of the game with our possession, and so we looked a lot better. So that's the silver lining ... The wins are going to come, and the group is united in that mindset."
The Union (6-4-7, 25 points) are also coming off a 1-1 home draw last Sunday against the Chicago Fire, which left team captain Alejandro Bedoya with "an empty feeling." Despite the Union's 25-4 shots advantage and the Fire being reduced to 10 men for 56 minutes, Philadelphia had to settle for a single point.
"Did we create enough chances? Maybe so, yeah, but we've still got to do better," Bedoya told the Philadelphia Inquirer. "We weren't able to put away our chances, and up a man ... even though maybe Chicago caves in, bunkers in, we've got to be better."
While the Union has an 11-point cushion over Toronto in the standings, Philadelphia hasn't been in good form, with only a 1-2-4 record over its last seven games.
Forward Sergio Santos will be available for selection in Philadelphia's lineup following a one-game suspension.
Reigning league MVP Alejandro Pozuelo is questionable after missing Toronto FC's last game with a leg injury.
Since the start of the 2015 season, Toronto FC is 4-1-1 in away games against the Union. The one loss, however, was the most recent meeting between the two sides -- a 5-0 Philadelphia rout on October 24, 2020.
